It seems like in Arizona, allergy season can last for months but seems to subside during the “winter”. If you feel like your allergies have gotten worse this season or while you are in your home it could be because your air ducts are filled with pesky allergens.
These allergens are then spread all throughout your house with your central cooling system! Having your air ducts cleaned once a year is a great way to combat allergies and also keep your AC unit in top working condition.
What Are Allergens?
Allergic reactions such as coughing, nasal drip, and watery eyes are triggered inhaling an allergen. The most prevalent airborne allergens that could be stuck in your ducts are as follows,
Dust Mites/Dust: In a desert like Arizona we have our fair share of dust! Dust mites and dust can get trapped in your air ducts and are one of leading causes of allergies in the home.
Pets/Dander: Cats are the most common per to trigger allergies in the home. Air inside of homes with pets contains dander from their fur but also from their saliva and mucus, gross!
Mold: Mold is a serious issue if it has infiltrated the home. Mold is typically found in any moist, dark places where it can proliferate. If you see any mold in your home it may seem that it is delegated to one specific place, but chances are it has spread throughout the home. High concentrations of mold can cause serious health issues.
The required frequency for cleaning the ducts can vary from home to home. A good rule of thumb is that you have an older home you will need to have more frequent cleanings than a home built in the last 20 years.
