TIP OF THE WEEK: Cranking your thermostat way up whenever you leave the house will NOT reduce your air conditioning bills in Mesa, AZ.
The US Department of Energy says you can save 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills by simply setting your thermostat up 10 degrees or so in the summer or back in the winter for at least 8 hours. You can do this automatically without sacrificing comfort by installing a programmable thermostat.
Set it and forget it. You can set vaious schedules for work and sleep on weekdays and weekends and let the programmable thermostat “remember” when to change for the most efficient and comfortable result. A caution to remember is not to use a regular programmable thermostat if you have a heat pump unit. Here are a couple of examples that DO NOT work:**Changing the thermostat setting for short periods of time several times a day. If you will be gone for less than 6 hours, leave your thermostat where it is. Lowering the thermostat to 60 degrees when you get home to kick the a/c into high gear and cool the home quicker DOES NOT cool your home off any faster, but it will use more energy than if you set the thermostat to a reasonable temperature.
